How healthy is Michigan?
Every year, America’s Health Rankings by United Health Foundation analyzes the overall health of each state. This includes a comprehensive look at health, environmental and socioeconomic data in order to decide how a state is ranked in comparison to the others.
How do you think Michigan did? Here’s a look at 5 categories and how Michigan did in 2017.
- Obesity – Of the 50 states, Michigan ranked 10 in the category of obesity, with 32.5% of Michigan adults considered obese. West Virginia was the highest with 37.7% adults and Colorado was the lowest, with 22.3%.
- Smoking – Michigan also was ranked the 10th state with the highest population of smokers. 20.4% of Michigan’s population consists of smokers. West Virginia was the highest with 24.8% and Utah was lowest with 8.8%.
- Diabetes – Of the 50 states, Michigan ranked 18th in number of adults with diabetes. 11.2% of Michigan adults are living with diabetes. West Virginia was highest with 15% and Colorado was lowest with 6.6%.
- Mental Health Providers – Michigan ranked 20th in states with mental health providers. For every 100,000 people, Michigan has an average of 235 mental health providers. Massachusetts ranked first with 547 mental health providers per 100,000 people, and Alabama ranked last with 85 mental health providers for every 100,000 people.
- Primary Care Physicians – Michigan ranked 6th in states with the highest number of primary care physicians per 100,000 people. Michigan has 193 primary care physicians for every 100,000 people. Rhode Island ranked first with 256 providers per 100,000 and Idaho came in last with 97 providers per 100,000 people.
